1. Elias Henry Nuckols, son of James Nuckols and Maria Stith, was born in Jan 1827 in VA VA VA, died 27 Apr 1904 in Henrico Co, Richmond, Clay Ward, VA at age 77, and was buried 29 Apr 1904 in Riverview Cemetery.

The funeral will take place from the above residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock and the interment will be made in River View Cemetery. Deceased leaves a wife, Mrs Mary Nuckols, and two sons, Mssrs E H and J H Nuckols. He had been in failing health for two years or more

Elias Henry Nuckolls was buried in Riverview Cemetery, Richmond, Va. on Ap ril 29, 1904. He died from cerebral apoplexy. He is buried in Plat F, Se c. 13, Div., Row 3, Grave 7. His name at the cemetery is shown as E. H. N uckols. I'm sure this is Elias Henry Nuckolls because in the 1900 Henrico census he is living at 1222 W. Main St. which is only about 2-3 blocks from the gate to Riverview Cemetery. Only 1 grave was bought at the time of his burial.

I expect that his wife is probably buried in Oakwood Cemetery because s he later moved back to the area around Oakwood Cemetery.

General Notes and Information:
Substancial evidence of naming patterns and locations indicate this is probably the son of James who appears in 1830 census with a son in this age bracket, but more conclusive evidence is needed.

6/2006 - I found two deeds for EHN. They were written in accordance wi th the Homestead Law of 1870 (a law passed in VA that apparently allowed property owners to designate certain items to be exempt from "distress or lien"...I had never heard of this before). These deeds were both written in 1885, and the second one was simply an update/addition to the fir st one. These were in the Hustings Court records for the City of Richmon d, VA. Elias Henry Nuckols lived "at tenement No. 2214 Main Street" when these deeds were written.

Painfully Burned
Yesterday morning a young woman named Rosa Breeden, living at 2216 East Main street was fearfully burned while attempting to kindle a fire with kerosine oil.She was alone in her room, and the can she sued held a gallon of the fuel. The blaze from the wood caught the oil as it came from the spout, and produced an explosion, setting fire to Mrs Breeden's clothing. Terribly frightened and screaming she ran from her room into the yard. A man saw her and hurried to her assistance, but fearing that he, too, would be burned, the poor creature would not let him approach her. Running to the hydrant he turned a stream of water on the girl and finally put out the flames. She was taken to the home of her aunt, Mrs Mary E Nuckols, next door, and medical assistance summoned. Her hair, face, ears and arms were badly blistered and she suffered intensely until some soothing balm was applied and an opiate administered. Miss Breeden is unmarried and for the past eight years has been a seamstress in the suit-making department of McAdans & Berry's store. Work being slack, she was home yesterday. It is not thought her burns will result seriously, although it will be some time before she recovers.

Mrs. Nuckols, Seventy Years Old, Detained at First Police Station.
Detained In a private room at the First Police Station, Mrs. Mary E.Nuckols, a motherly old woman, something like seventy years of age, ls belng held for the Police Court this morning to answer a charge of assaulting and striking W. H, Alley. The
old woman has quite a respectable appearance, and has evidently seen better times. The trouble occurred on Saturday
nlght, Alley being badly cut about the head. Mrs. Nuckols was arrested and taken to tne Second Police Station. No one appeartng to give bail for her, and on account ot the pathetic circumstances surrounding her arrest, Captain Epps arranged for her transfer to the First Station, where there-are private rooms up-stairs, ln which a prisoner may be detained, To Captain Barfoot, of the First Station, tho old woman said simply; "Yes, i must have struck hlm," but she would not tell
of the circumstances of the quarrel. The case wlll be heard in the Police Court this morning.

Captain W M Nuckols one of Petersburg's best known citizens died this morning about 12 o'clock. He was past master of Powhattan State Lodge of Masons and past commander of Appomatox Knights Templar. He carried a policy of $10,000 on his life in the Mutual Insurance Company of New York. The deceased was at one time Captain of the Petersburg Grays, a military company of this place. He has been for many years a prominent coal dealer of this city. He leaves a widow with several children.

What came near beign a serious accident at the shoot yesterday was Mr Nuckols cutting himself. In attempting to take a shell from his pocket his arm came in contact with his open knife and he was severely stabbed. It was some minutes before the flow of blood was staunched.

Death of Mrs John H Nuckols
Mrs mary A Nuckols, wife of Mr John H Nuckols and sister of Policeman E R Robinson, died at her residence No 2312 East Clay St yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Her death was quite unexpected. She had been sick for a week, but seemed better yesterday afternoon when Officer Robinson went up to the City Hall for the annual inspection of the police force. Before he had taken his place in line, though, Chief Howard received a phone message that Mrs Nuckols was dying and Mr Robinson hurried home. Mrs Nuckols was a most estimable Christian lady, a faithful wife and loving mother. She was born and reared in Richmond and was in the 42nd year of her age. She leaves a husband and seven children. Mrs Nuckols had long been a member of Leigh Street Baptist Church. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the home.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Albert Palmieri; h er children, Phyllis Blanks, Connie Kympton and her husband, David, and Ca role Reynolds, all of Richmond; two sisters, Jean Rich and Shirley Peters on and her husband, Herbert; three grandchildren, Sheri and Barton Blan ks and Katherine Reynolds. Our beloved mother, Sarah Hawks Nuckols, age 90, went to be with the Lor d, her saviour, on January 3, 2007. Sarah was preceded in death by her lov ing husband, Timothy H. Nuckols Sr.; one grandson and a great-grandson. S he leaves to cherish her memory forever, her son, Timothy H. Nuckols Jr. a nd wife, Frances; her daughters, Barbara N. Willis and husband, Robert, De lores N. Lindsey and Beverly N. Davidson and husband, Robert; and a sister -in-law, Catherine N. Woodle. She leaves many loving and devoted grandchil dren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, along with the ir spouses, to whom she will always be an inspiration by touching their li ves with her love. She also leaves many other loving family members and fr iends. Sarah was a member of the West End Alliance Church and a charter me mber of the Red Hat Society - Southern Bells. Her remains rest at the Blil ey Funeral Homes' Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the f amily will receive friends on Friday, January 5, 2007 from 2 to 4 a nd 6 to 8 p.m., and where services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Janua ry 6.
