The freight train on the Va. & Tennessee Railroad ran off a few miles above
Forest Depot, on Saturday last. While assisting in the effort to replace the
cars on the track, Mr.
John Nuckols,
of Lynchburg, an employee of the Company, was forced into an embankment by a
detached car, and almost literally buried. He was extricated with much
difficulty, but the injuries he received were of an internal character and have
since proved fatal

Cunningham, wife of Grant Cunningham, of the Meadow Branch vicinity was found
dead in bed Saturday morning at 2 o’clock. The deceased, it is said, had been in
poor health for some time but her condition was never considered perilous enough
to warrant medical attention. Friday evening she was not feeling so well and she
was found dead that night by her husband. Coroner Brewster was called and
conducted an inquest. The investigation revealed that death had been caused from
a functional heart trouble produced by a systoma. Funeral services were
conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Meadow Branch Church, Rev M J
Wahl of Grafton officiating. The deceased is survived by her husband and seven
children. Two children died prior to her demise. At the time of her death she
was thirty-four years of age. (Minnie NUCKOLS was born
6/13/1889 in St Charles MO. And died 2/23/1924 in Jersey Co, IL. Her death cert
says she was the dau of Pete Nockles and Martha Qualls On

Glendon Stone, young white man of Broad
street this city, was instantly killed Friday night near Stoneville, N.C., when
a car in which he and two companions were riding ran off state highway 77 into a
ditch and turned completely over. Stone was badly hurt internally causing death
instantly. Earl Knight, a companion was taken to the Leaksville Hospital in a
serious condition. The third occupant of the car was only slightly hurt. Funeral
services for the deceased were held from Mount Herman Church, three miles
northwest of Bassett Sunday afternoon. Burial followed nearby. Surviving are his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ewell Stone; one sister, Mrs. R. T. Adams and five
brothers, Woodrow Stone, Cecil Stone, Howard Knuckles,

Frightened when her husband, Ed Adamson, a miner of the Kelley's Creek Colliery
Company at Ward was knocked down by a passing automobile between Cedar Gravoe
and Ward Sunday night, Mrs Tressie Adamson, 46 died instantly of a heart attack.
She slumped to the ground even as he leaped to his feet saying " I'm not hurt."

Crash Kills 1 Injures 1
A grand Prairie man was killed and a Dallas
truck driver seriously injured early Wednesday in a fiery 2-truck crash on
Interstate Highway 35 about 2 miles west of Norman Okla. Clyde LaCrone, 28 of
922 SE 11th in Grand Prairie, died shortly after the semitrailer truck in which
he was riding hit a parked gravel dump truck, the AP reported. LaCrone was
trapped in the sleeping compartment and suffered third degree burns over his
entire body when the wreckage burst into flames. The driver,
Leroy Nuckolls, 30, of 2311 Pentagon Parkway in
Dallas was reported in serious condition at a Norman hospital later. The driver
of the parked dump truck escaped injury.

Funeral services for James C.
Knuckles Sr., retired custodian for
the Federal Reserve Bank in Buffalo, were held today in St. Michael & All Angels
Episcopal Church. Burial was in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton. Knuckles, 86,
of Buffalo, died Wednesday (June 9, 1993) in Erie County Medical Center
following an illness. The Greenville, S.C., native graduated from Sterling High
School in Greenville and moved to Buffalo during World War II. One of 14
children, he worked two jobs for much of his life. He worked for Houdaille
Industries and Bethlehem Steel Corp. and retired from the Federal Reserve
position in 1971. He was a member of Paramount Lodge 75, Prince Hall Masons, for
40 years and served as treasurer for 22 years. He was active in other social
organizations and for 33 years was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church,
where he was an usher and sexton. More recently, he was a member of St. Michael
& All Angels and delivered altar flowers to the sick and shut-ins after Sunday
services. He looked after many nieces and nephews as well as his own children.
His wife, Edith L., died in 1985. Survivors include a son, James Jr. of
Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Michele Ely of Rochester; a sister, Agnes Mack of

in Roebuck. Michael Leonard Nuckols, 29, of 12402
Greenville Highway, Lyman, was heading west on Highway 29 near the New Hope Road
intersection when he lost control of his car early Thursday, according to the
Spartanburg County Coroner's Office. Investigator Richard Seay said Nuckols was
driving at least 80 mph when his car drifted into the median. Nuckols
overcorrected, and the car crossed back across the westbound lanes and ran off
the road, went airborne and smashed into several trees. The car was demolished,
and Nuckols was ejected. The accident happened about 2:55 a.m. Thursday. "It was
impossible to tell if he was wearing a seat belt, it was that bad," Seay said.
"It literally just cut the left side off." Nuckols was pronounced dead at the
scene. Seay said he died of massive body trauma. Staff writer Chase Squires

NUCKOLS -- Arlington Activist
Gail Nuckols, 55, an Arlington activist who served on the county School Board
from 1983 to 1991, died of cancer Sept. 30 at Arlington Hospital. Mrs. Nuckols
until recently had been legislative assistant to Virginia Del. Julia Connally
(D-Arlington), and she was Arlington representative on the Northern Virginia
Community College board. During her years on the Arlington School Board, she
served three times as chairwoman. Under her leadership, junior high schools were
converted to middle schools and a seven-period day was instituted for high
schools. Mrs. Nuckols was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was an accomplished flutist
and studied music at the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a
degree in history. A former resident of Montclair, N.J., she had lived in
Arlington since her marriage in 1963 to C.G. Nuckols.
She served on the executive board of Arlingtonians for a Better County, and she
was a member of the Arlington Committee of 100, the Commission to Study
Arlington's Future, the League of Women Voters, the Arlington Historical Society
and the American Association of University Women. In addition to her husband,
survivors include two children, Andrew Nuckols and Sharon
Nuckols, all of Arlington.

School, which she graduated from at the age of sixteen. Further, she later
obtained a B.S. degree from Fayetteville State Normal School. She retired from
the Lumberton and Robeson county school systems. She was organist for St.
Francis Catholic Church for over 35 years. She was the widow of the late Douglas
Pope, Jr. Funeral mass will be held on Monday 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic
Church, Father Thomas Watkins. Burial in Gardens of Faith Cemetery. A rosary and
prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Sunday at McMillan Funeral

Dr. Joseph L. Knuckles, 74,
educator/research scientist died Thursday on the campus of Fayetteville State
University where he was a professor for 42 years. Dr. Knuckles, son of the late
Dr. and Mrs. W.H. Knuckles of Lumberton touched the
lives of many during his extensive career in the field of education. A graduate
of N.C. Central University, BS, MS and the University of Connecticut, Ph.D, his
achievements and activities were countless.Included were: chairman of the FSU
department of Biological and Physical Sciences for 11 years, grant researcher,
publisher, senior assistant scientist Naval Lieutenant, U.S. Public Health
Services and FSU Assistant Football coach. He alsoserved as a member of the
trustee board of Sandy Grove Baptist Church, veteran of U.S. Army. Funeral
service will be held at Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Lumberton, N.C. on
Tuesday, Sept. 15th at 2 p.m. Rev. Otis Pelham officiating. Burial will follow
in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, Sept. 14th from 7-9 p.m.

Cunningham. She married Kenneth H. Henderson on January 19, 1968, in
Litchfield. He died September 7, 1989. Surviving are a daughter, Gracie Welch
and husband Maurice of Staunton; sister, Reba Watson of Jerseyville; and five
grandchildren, Michael Welch and wife Carol, William A. Welch, David K. Welch,
Brian Welch and wife Michele, Malindia K. Pruden and husband Darrell; five great

Margaret Louise Woold-ridge, 73, of
Mabscott, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her home following a long illness.
Born March 25, 1926, in Skelton, she was the daugher of the late Lloyd E. and
Susie Teel Walker. Mrs. Woold-ridge was assistant manager with the canteen
service at the VA Medical Center for more than 35 years. She was a 1944 graduate
of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was a member of First Christian Church
(Disciple of Christ) in Beckley. Her hobbies included gardening and crocheting,
having won numerous awards at the West Virginia State Fair in both categories.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe J. Wooldridge; and four
brothers, Lloyd Walker Jr., Robert Walker, Jesse Lee Walker and Raymond Walker.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Knuckles and
his wife, Shirley, of Princeton, Thomas Knuckles
and his wife, Nanette, of Fishers, Ind., and David
Knuckles and his wife, Karen, of Covington, Va.; a daughter, Cathy
Showalter and her husband, Gary, of Beckley; three stepsons, Dan Wooldridge and
his wife, Sue, of Dallas, Mike Wooldridge and his wife, Lenny, of Stephensville,
Texas, and Larry Wooldridge of San Antonio; three stepdaughters, Linda Morando
of New York, Cathy Jo Byers and her husband, Don, of Glen Jean and Patty Flynn
and her husband, Tom, of San Antonio; a brother, John Teel Walker and his wife,
Helen, of Beckley; three sisters, Elma Allen and her husband, Bob, of Belle,
Eileen Graham of Herndon, Va., and Sue Ann Ernst of Port Ludlow, Wash.; 10
grandchildren; 22 stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will
be 11 a.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev.
Russell Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens,
Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Grandsons will
serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

LANDSCAPER, 45
Harry Nuckles Jr., 45, of Levittown, owner of a landscaping business, died
Saturday at Temple Health Systems' Lower Bucks Hospital in Bristol Township
after suffering a heart attack. For more than 10 years, he owned and operated
Harry's Landscaping in Levittown. Mr. Nuckles, a native of Fort Benning, Ga.,
had resided in Levittown for 35 years and was a graduate of a local high school.
He enjoyed playing darts and was interested in sports and music. He was a member
of the Bucks County Blues Society. He is survived by his wife of 15 years,
Helene Smith Nuckles; children, Julie Dagostino,
Michael and Gregory; a stepdaughter, Krista; his mother, Shirley DeRemer; his
father and stepmother, Harry Sr. and Sara Nuckles;
a sister; a brother; a stepsister; and a grandson. Friends may call after 9:30
a.m. today at Galzerano Funeral Home, 3500 Oxford Valley Rd. in Levittown, where
a service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. The family welcomes

NUCKOLS, Mary Whitaker, 51, of
Salem, passed away Monday, July 17, 2000, after a brief battle with cancer. She
was the loving wife of Chris, and mother of Angela M.
Nuckols of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael C. Nuckols
of Raleigh, N.C. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived
by her father, Dr. Charles Bollin Whitaker of Aiken, S.C.; four sisters, Dorothy
Ann Bedard of Chester, Virginia Catherine Whitaker of Aiken, S.C., Jean
Elizabeth Kudach of Wilmington, Del., and Patricia Louise Dunham of Newark,
Del.; and two brothers, Charles Bollin Whitaker, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and
Michel William Whitaker of Beaufort, S.C.; also surviving are 11 nieces and
nephews. Her mother, Dorothy Michel Whitaker, preceded her in death. She was a
volunteer at the Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke as well as a tutor with Literacy
Volunteers of America. Previously she served on the Board of Directors of
Catholic Charities of Southwest Virginia. The family will receive friends
Tuesday, July 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton
Ave., SW, in Roanoke. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 19,
at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Andrews Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the
American Cancer Society.

was the son of the late Daniel and Florene Nuckols, born January 11, 1928.
Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, September 9, 2000, at the
Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mineral, Va. The family will receive friends from 11
