TRAGEDY AT FORNFELT
Marshal John Utnage Kills Morgan and Haynes Knuckles
Haynes and Morgan Knuckles where shot dead and John Knuckles was shot through the arm by Marshal John Utnage at Fornfelt Saturday night about 10:30. Ben Knuckles escaped unhurt. All were brothers.
Monday I went into town to try to get particulars but could find no one here who seemed to know much about it. It was reported that the marshal was in a critical condition from the attack on him by the men.
I also learned that the coroner's jury had exonerated the marshal but that means little. Whether or not one is exonerated by a coroner's jury often depends on who you are. So I decided to go to Fornfelt and investigate.
Arriving there I soon discovered that reports of the affair were very conflicting. Friends of the administration talked freely and justified the marshal. Others talked less freely and thought the marshal acted hastily. When I announced that I would go to the marshal's house and get his story I was told to keep a lookout and he would be along presently.
"Is he on duty?" I asked. "I thought he was badly hurt".
"Oh no. He was only choked and has a few scratches on his face. I had less than an hour to stay and did not get to see Mr Utnage. His brother, Will, of Sandywoods had gone up to the train to visit him and I suppose he entertained him.
However I tried to get both sides, and as told to me, neither side sounds reasonable. Yet I got it from men who wer present at the coroner's inquest Sunday-Squire Bean of Illino, acting coroner.
It seems that Fornfelt is bordering on the higher civilization and is sprouting a Red Light District to the south part of town and that complaints had been made to the authorities. According to the marshal's story, as told to me by others, the officer went over into this neighborhood about 10 o'clock in citizen's clothes and stood by a post to get evidence. Presently the Knuckles brothers came along and wanted to know what he was doing there.
So far both sides agree.
For the marshal it is said the four jumped on him, got him down and began to choke and beat him when he whipped out his pistol and began shooting. But the surviviors of the Knuckles boys say that when they asked what he was doing there, the marshal drew his pistol saying "I'll show you." And begins to shoot.
One witness testified that near one dead body he found an open knife and near the other he found a closed knife. Also that in the pocket of one was a billy.
It seems that there were no eye-witnesses except the parties engaged. Morgan was shot thru the head, the bullet entering the mouth. Haynes was shot twice through the body about the breast and John was shot through the arm. What puzzles me is how a man could accomplish such wholesale slaughter wihile the other fellows had him down.
Furthermore, I believe it was generally agreed that the marshal's pistol was taken from him by the survivors and thrown into the woods. If so, then this must have happened after the shooting. As I understood it, the pistol had not been found up to Monday.
As for the story told by the Knuckles boys, that also seems improbable. John Untage is considered a good man and a story that he could deliberately begin shooting upon being asked what he was doing there will not be credited by those who know him.
On the way back I again met with Will Untage and expected to get particulars from him. But he seemed unwilling to say much about the matter. He said, however, that John's throat was in pretty bad shape and that they got his watch and pistol. The story telegraphed to the St Louis papers from Illimo that the trouble occurred in a bawdy house when the marshal went in to arrest the inmates has no foundation in fact. The marshal was outside watching to see who went in and out for the purpose of having them subpoenaed as witnesses is the story told to me- and on which all agreed.
Morgan Knuckles leaves a wife and baby. His home was at Malden and he was up on a visit to his parents. The iwfe and baby came to attend the funeral Monday. Haynes is said to have a wife but did not live with her. Both bodies were buried in Fornfelt Cemetery-both in the same grave.
