LAND PROCESSIONING RECORDS
1708-1760

The following processioning records were researched and transcribed by Ardath Edwards Katsenis and were left in her estate. The family had no desire to retain the records, so they were donated to the Nuckolls Society July 2004. None of the pages were numbered, and they were not in any reasonable order. After many hours of trying to put them in some sort of order, there are still pages which do not flow one to the other. In those cases I will try to indicate them with “partial”.

Processioning is a term used to signify the manner of ascertaining the boundaries of land, as provided for by the laws of the state. Source: Bouviers Law Dictionary1856 edition. Processioning was an important part of Colonial life. Once each year the land boundaries were checked (or prosessioned) to make sure they were still accurate.Usually three persons, one for each side of the boundary line and one neutral person, measured the property. Rivers and creeks had a way of changing course, or lightening felling the. corner oak tree, many times redefined the boundaries, thus the continue practice of processioning.
