Is this the John in Marshall Co, VA (now WV) 1840 pg 255 with a daughter u nder the age of 5? The birth of his dau Harriett fits the age bracket sho ws his age 20-30 which fits. Three females 20-30 and one 60-70 which proba bly was his mother. Name was spelled Nuckles A problem is that this coun ty is so far from Campbell. But in a direct migration path if traveling fr om Marshall Co WV to Bath Co, VA to Campbell Co, VA.

1830 Hanover Co, VA Elizabeth (Childress) Nuckols, (wife of Jonathan Nucko ls), 4 sons, 2 missing, but has one documented named John, so we can elimi nate this one.

1830 John William Nuckolls Hanover Co, VA has 7 sons in 1830. 5 are docume nted, 2 have never been found, but he has no namesake. So this is a SLIG HT possibility, but the spelling is Nuckols, and Hanover County is some di stance.

1830 William Nuckles- Tazewell Co, VA has 4 sons, 3 are missing, but th ey are wrong age, and I believe they are the unconnected ones who settl ed in Kanawaha and Botetourt Co. So another SLIGHT possibility.

1830 John Nuckles, Tazewell Co, VA has documented 3 sons in house, Elish a, Hardin and John, so we can eliminate as he already has son named John.

1830 Levi NUCKLES Pittsylvania Co, VA has 2 sons this age in 1830 a nd we have never found his sons.

2)Age bracket is correct for this John Nuckles.
3) 1840 Census for Levi his sons are not in the household which agrees wi th our information that John married 1838.
4)Pittsylvania County is adjacent to Campbell Co, VA. Common for kin to l ive close.
5)Levi had a brother named John who he might have named a child
6)John Named a son Thomas which would have been his great grandfather

Your John has never been found in 1840.
1840 offers very few John Nuckols, considering in 1830 there were many.
1 John is in Rockbridge County VA, named Knuckles, but the line is docume nted beyond 1840 and is not yours, but is another unconncected family

There is a John Knuckles in Marshall Co, VA 1840 . Marshall Co is n ow in WV and was formed 1835 from Ohio Co, VA which was formed from a dist rict of Augusta County. However, he has 2 children under the age of 5 a nd yours married in Dec 1838 making it impossible to have 2 children bo rn before 1840. (Unless one twin, and one died before 1850)

I thought I hit paydirt when I found a John NICHOLS next to Levi Nuckl es in 1840, but when checking the page it was really Nickols with a dott ed I and he was older with lots of kids.

There are no other Johns in 1840. I am sure he is indexed as Nichols, whi ch means you may never find him. But the fact he settled in Campbell Co, n ext to Pittsylvania Co, probably to be closer to kin, would be the like ly choice.

Yea, I think that has to be my Ida. I was so busy looking for Charles th at I didn't even think to look for Ida! I just shows how you can get tunn el vision and not see the forest for the trees! I found her in 1910 livi ng with her husband and in 1920 widowed living with her son so that mea ns Charles died between 1910 and 1920. My husbands father died when he w as very young and before that his parents had divorced. His mom remarri ed to a military man and they lived all over so my husband doesn't know t oo much about his Nuckols family. A few years ago I got in touch with h is aunt and she was the one who sent be the marriage and birth certifica te I sent you. I've been trying to call her for the last few days but I ha ven't reached her yet. I'm hoping she can clear up the Mary-Myrtle myster y. I'll also ask if she knows Charles middle name. Former Railway Conductor and Ernest Grant are Victims
Lynchburg Va, Aug 19- J.R. Nuckles, 70, of this city, a retired Norfolk a nd Western Railway conductor, and Ernest Grant, 20, of Pleasantview, Amher st County, were victims of two automobile fatalities at an early hour th is morning, one of which happened in the city and the other in Amherst Cou nty. J.E. Nuckles, 35, son of the dead conductor was slightly injured, a nd Burger Duff, of Pleasantview, who was driving the car in which Grant w as killed suffered a fractured leg. He was brought to a hospital here. T he elder and younger NUCKLES were driving in Amherst with Osker Eckhard t, of Boonsboro, and the car became disabled. O P Patterson went for th em in a wrecking car, and after towing the disabled car to a garage, he of fered to take the NUCKLES men home. On the way his car left the street a nd ran over a pile of street car material, breaking the neck of the eld er NUCKLES. After the accident Patterson was arrested on a charge of bei ng under the influence of liquor.

Charlestown, WV - Witnesses testified Thursday afternoon of fighting, shoo ting and admittance of killing by the defendant in a voluntary manslaught er trial being held in the Jefferson County Courthouse. Mrs Lilly Pearl Nu ckles, 55, of Shenandoah Junction was indicted in April by a grand ju ry in the fatal shooting of her husband, Warren B Nuckles, the night of F eb 5th. State's attorney John Skinner told the jury the main question is w hether the shooting was in self-defense or justifiable homicide. Mrs Bet ty Yost, a neighbor, testified that on the night in question, the defenda nt gave her a gun and said, "I shot my husband." Mrs Yost said that Mrs Nu ckles told her that Mr Nuckles beat their daughter, Patricia. Ranson polic eman Charles Bennett testified that upon arrival at the scene, he saw M rs Nuckles standing over her husband's body which was lying face down. T he policeman further said that Mrs Nuckles told him on the night of the in cident that she had warned her husband, "never lay a hand on my daughter a gain." "I shot him" Mrs Nuckles said, according to policeman Bennett. Defe nse attorney William H White Jr in addressing the jury said that followi ng the beating of the Nuckles daughter Patricia, he was about to turn on h is wife, when she produced the gun. A jury of 10 men and trwo women are he aring the evidence before Judge Gray Silver Jr. Testimony from police troo per Arthur is expected to resume Friday morning. Charlestown, WV- Funeral Service will be held Thursday after noon at 2 f or Warren B Nuckles, 45 of Shenandoah Junction.He was allegedly shot to de ath Saturday by his wife. State Police Sunday charged Mrs Lillie Pearl Nuc kles, 55, with the murder of her husband. According to investigators, Nuck les, a cab driver in Washington DC was killed Saturday night in the Nuckl es living room by a gunshot wound in the chest allegedly fired at close ra nge from a small caliber pistol. Investigators said the shooting climax ed a family argument. Nuckles was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr Mildr ed Williams, Jefferson County coroner. Mrs Nuckles has been released fr om the Jefferson County jail on $5000 bond. The murder case will be hea rd by the April term of the county grand jury. Services will be held for N uckles at the Melvin T Strider Colonial Funeral Home here. Burial wi ll be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown. Nuckles is survived bu his w idow; a daughter Patricia at home and a brother in Washington. The shooti ng was investigated by Trooper G F Arthur and Constable M L Buracker.
