(This doesn't make sense. Could they have switched the b & d dates?)

The caretaker of Cranberry Cemetery wrote back to say that they could n ot find out anything concerning any of the Nuckolls buried their. The re is something that I have been wondering about. The land where the cemet ery is located was donated by Sera Jane. Bettie (William's Mother) is buri ed there. Sera Jane inherited alot of money from her first husband and pro bably bought the land after her first husband died Boyd Hash. Their only c hild Aurora found in cemetery records was born 1878?I'm not sure if the ye ar is right, trying to locate gravesite. Bettie had to be buried on her la nd after she bought it or she purchased the land because she was buried th ere. The marked isn't in line with the other Nuckolls graves and it's n ot an old marker. William & Sera's first child was born 23, Dec. 1878 a nd died 21, May 1885 is buried in the same cemetery. The childs tombstone looks older than Bettie's marker. Also if she died then why wasn't h er dates recorded on her marker unless nobody knew her exact birth and death date.

Another story of Sarah Jane Shepherd Nuckolls was sent to me. Wiley Edis on Maybe remembered a story about (Gordie). Seems he had done something th at angered Aunt Jane and she threatened to whip him. His response was "you 're not big enough" and her reaction to that was to wait until he was asleep and sew him into the bedclothes and then she gave him the lickings. Then so the story goes, he left home and where he ended up nobody knows. Wiley also stated that others in the family wasn't sure which boy it was. I believe this could be Robert Lee Nuckolls because he left home to ne ver to return. I found a letter he wrote to Aurora and plus all the lette rs and postcards he had written to his girlfriend asking about different p eople while in the service and other letters the brothers were asking abo ut the where about of Rob. Ms Reeves said that Jane was stubborn and proba bly wouldn't change her membership. William wasn't listed in the origin Be llview Church Minutes after his death. Jane probably had something to do w ith that too

Mrs. Reeves gave me the copy of the cemetery records at Liberty Hill where Aurora is buried. I also seen where her daughter's child was also buried there. Will send you a copy in a few days. When I was rereading so me of the old letters sent by the Nuckolls brothers, I notice where Robert wrote from Texas(sent to Aurora) after 1900. that he asked about Aurora 's father. He seen him recently in W.Wa. The story was told that Boyd died of TB maybe before Sarah Jane and William got married. I will also send you a copy and see what you make of it. Sarah Jane may have told William that he died

(Doesn't jive with your death date. Anyway, this makes him 102 at deat h, so it is likely wrong.)

Both are buried at Cranberry Primitive Baptist Church, road #1607, 2 1 /2 mi south from junction of 113 & 221, Ashe County side.

A story was recorded that William's father was a deserter from a war. Two family members told me that they heard that when William was very small, his father put him on his knee and told him that some people where after him and the next morning the family found him dead in a nearby ditch. I spoke to a gentlemen doing research in the library last month and he told me that that they usually didn't kill you if you are a war deserter because alot of men had farms back home. It could be he was running from the law. Could that be recorded somewhere?

This article was se nt to me in 1985 by someone who had researched the Shepherds Line.>>Some years after the first store house was built and goods being sold in it, the re was another store house built on the opposite side of the creek near er to the Fields house. The first merchant to sell goods in that house w as a man by the name of Weaver. After him came James Waugh and Creed Nuckolls. After them came Weldon Edward who rented the store, sold goods for several years, then moves to the east side of Pine Mountain. After Edward s, McLean and Hale sold goods up to the beginning of the Civil War. After the war was over two young Confederate solders, Charley Evans, who before the war lived at Baltimore, and Captain Blankenship, from Fredericksburg, Va. drifted here. Neither could go back at that time in account if t he Federal army having possession of their homes. During the war Evans h ad lost his right arm and Capt. Blankenship his right leg. They drifted he re and by some means got a small stock of goods and continued in the business a few years. Before them came W.J. Neikirk who sold goods and bought horses for the southern market. He married while here Miss Leutitia Ross. After a few years he moved up near Grassy Creek, N.C

I talked to a 73 year old lady that is researching information on Cranberry Cemetery where my family is buried. She was also present when William died. She was around four or five. She told me William Nuckolls donated land for Bellview Church which is less than a mile from Cranberry. Cranberry split up and William changed his membership to Bellview. He was a committeemen and wanted to start their own cemetery. This lady Mrs. Reeves said her uncle was the first one buried their. Later they decided to share t he one cemetery. She remembered a Nuckolls being buried without a grave marker in the 40's. She wants to see the data I have collected on William & Sarah's children. The reason she had an interest in the Nuckolls w as that her mother had a trunk full of old love letters from my uncle Robert (the one I am searching for). The letters are lost but she had one where he wanted to marry her and she turned him down because maybe of family problems. Robert was in the Ohio 52th U.S. Army WW1. He was an office r. Where could I get information on him. She is getting me more information on other people to call. She called an 82 year old man about William a nd he said that he did die at home because someone by the name of Dan Hill and Elmer Taylor was walking down the road when William fell to the floor and Sarah Jane yelled at them to help get him up and that was when he died. She gave me an address of an old lady that lives in PA who has al ot of information. Every one said so far that noboby heard William talk ab out his parents.
5/29/2002
I met with Ms. Reeves today and she had alot of information on William Nuc kolls. Every one called him Willie. She made a lot of phone calls for m . She wants me to help her figure out what Nuckolls was buried in the Cra nberry Cemetery in the mid-40's without a grave marker. She remembers alot of nice flowers was placed on the grave and she saw them on a Sun morning. She thinks it might have been some of W.Va. Nuckolls. She thought some one said that it was one of William's children. All of them are accounted for but Robert. She wants to collect alot of information in a book form and sell them and use the money to purchase markers for the ones in t he Cranberry Cemetery without any. She helped a man who was taking care if the graves and knew that at one time all the old field stones where cleared out of the cemetery and there are alot of lost graves. Al so we were going through her 1850 Ashe Co. Census and found a Geo. Nicke ls 23 from Va. and Elizabeth 28 Children; David age 6, Eda age 3 and Pol ly 8/12 from Peak Creek Comm. pg. 16 author Danny L. Miller. I kn ow it is a long short. I also found in my notes several years ago that I w ritten down that William was born in the Peak Comm. in Ashe. I've asked Mr s. Reeves to help me locate anyone in that comm that might know something. Wm. & Sarah's house burned in 1899 or 1900 and he purchased land in Ob id Comm which is close to Peak Creek Comm in Ashe Co in 1899 .I will go sometime and check out land records and wills. Still waiting on a reply from the funeral home and the very old distant cousin from PA. Mrs. Reeves s howed me a love letter Robert Nuckolls wrote to her mother in 1909 from Ca mp -Perry, Ohio 2nd.U.S. Infantry (AHA Pruden Chapin Library) was print ed on the stationery.I'm going back to see her Thurs and get a copy of t he letter .--

My half-brother told to the family that he remembered that William Nuckol ls showed up one day out of nowhere and married Sarah Jane Shepherd.

One old gentleman told Ms. Reeves that William wanted to visit his s on in Chicago that was sick and Jane wouldn't give him the money and when he got the money his son died before he got to see him. He wasn't sure if they didn't have the money or she didn't want him to go. I cannot understand why Gordie was buried in the Cranberry Cemetery before Jane and William was married. Sarah Jane Shepherd's and her people donated the land for the cemetery

The Nuckolls Family
as told by Phyllis Nuckolls McMahan
Our grandfather, William M Nuckolls was born October 5, 1856 and eid May 1 2, 1934 with a heart attack. He stated that when he was little, his father was a Union soldier in the Civil War, he was advised they were looking for him. He took William in his lap and kissed him goodbye, and later t hey found his body (his father) in a ditch nearby. He was thought to be a deserter from the Army. If you recall the story Marshall Wyatt wrote on Edison Nuckolls life history as a musician, It told of William Nuckolls, a family of boys that settled in Grayson County Virginia. They were originally from Zash, England, their names were James, John and William.

William M Nuckolls was married to Sarah Jane Shepherd. Sarah was born July 17, 1854 and died Sept 17, 1944 with pneumonia after having a stroke. H r first husband was Boyden Hash and they had a daughter Aurora. He died of TB and I understand he was quite wealthy. That was why grandma had quite a bit of money. Aurora married John Henry Waggoner on Oct 31 19 00 in Alleghany County North Carolina. Both are buried at Liberty Hi ll in Nathan's Creek Community in Asche Co, NC

We took care of grandmother in her later days as Dad had two houses. I lis tened to a lot of her stories. One that really fascinated me is as follow s. "When she was little and she was riding with her aunt on a horse, th ey stopped to let a gap down and the horse started bucking. All of a sudd en a panther leaped out of a tree, snatched her bonnet and left. If she h ad not have had on a bonnet it would have taken her head."

Sarah jane told us about her house burning one night. They had a piano, lace curtains and a quite elaborate house. Her son came home from a date a nd was smoking in the bed upstairs, all of a sudden when the fire start ed the older boys savaged bedding, furniture, etc. They got hasty and d id not take time to dress and they put all the things they got out near t he house. Edison was only five years old. He got dressed and climbed out t he window like a man and was very cool. When the house burned the second f loor fell on all the furnishings they had savaged and nothing was saved. T hey all hid in the bushes while little Edison went to a nearby neighbors f or help.

4 M    ii. Gordie Nuckolls was born 23 Dec 1878 in Alleghany Co, NC, died 21 May 1885 in Alleghany Co, NC at age 6, and was buried 23 May 1885 in Cranberry Primitive Church Cemetery.

Death Notes:
The birth date listed on Gordie's headstone is the exact same date as that of his half sister, Aurora Hash. At this point, it is believed that the birth date for Aurora is correct. The sole source for Gordie's date of birth is his headstone, which may have been set at a later date with confused information. It is also possible that Gordie and Aurora may have been twins, and that Gordie was adopted by William Nuckolls after he married Sara Jane.

General Notes and Information:
Gordie, the first born has the birth year, month and day as Aurora. I se en it when I was recording the dates. I thought I made a mistake. I'm goi ng by the Ashe cemetery records at the library. I know Gordie's is right b ecause I decorate the graves every year. I cannot locate the cemetery ye t, the church is no longer in use where Aurora is buried. One of the dat es must be wrong.

The Nuckolls Family
as told by Phyllis Nuckolls McMahan
Was born Dec 23, 1878 and died May 21, 1885 at the age of 7. Dad pointed h is grave out to me in the Nuckolls Cemetery and said not to forget to deco rate his grave. I never really learned what caused his death.

I took my dousing rods to Cranberry Cemetery today and checked the gra ve of Gordie Nuckolls. Contrary to cemetery records, Gordie is a boy as t he Nuckolls family believes.

Since Gordie is reported to have died at the age of seven, I wanted to s ee if I could get a reading on the length of the body. From the place ne ar the heardstone where I could get a solid reading to the bottom of the g rave where I could get a solid reading was 64 inches. I checked three oth er graves like this. John Frank Nuckolls measured 80 inches, William M. Nu ckols measured 103 inches, and an infant grave measured 43 inches.

Now, I'm not suggesting that these measurements are the actual length of t he bodies, only that the measurements represent the distance where I pi ck up a body reading. Since the infant grave measured 43 inches and the t wo adult graves averaged 90 inches, it seems reasonable to conclude that a
seven-year old child is buried in a grave measuring 64 inches.

With that said, I would like to suggest that the dates listed on Gordie 's headstone might possibly be confused. The dates are: b. Dec. 23, 187 8; d. May 21, 1885.

I didn't examine the headstone carefully , nor do I have any knowledge wh en it comes to dating headstones. However, this particular headstone do es not appear to have been set at the grave near the time of death.

I'd suggest that this headstone may have been set many years later. At th is point, someone had the date of May 21, 1885 associated with Gordie. Als o, it may be that someone noted that the first child of Sara Jane was bo rn December 23, 1878. Assuming this to be Gordie, these two dates were p ut on the headstone, when actually, it could have been that May 21, 18 85 is Gordie's date of birth, instead of his death.

The other children of William and Sara Jane Nuckolls were born: 1886, 188 7, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1895. A birth date of 1885 (ten months before child # 2) seems more in line, than for one child to have been born and then di ed before any of the others came along.

And since it is pretty firmly established that Aurora Hash's (Gordie's ha lf sister by a different father) birthday was December 23, 1878, it follo ws that Gordie Nuckolls birth date as recorded on the headstone mu st be in error.

Also, on another note, there is a male buried beside the grave marked "Bet tie: Mother of W.M. Nuckolls."

Sincerely,
Brodrick Shepherd, Author

This is where WM & S.Jane raised th eir children.I didn't have his birthdate at the time, but found it in t he census and it was the same year 1888 that his grandfather Robert ha d. He wrote that on Robert's death certificate his parents was list ed a unknown. We also heard that he didn't have children. John said his fa ther was adopted by Robert Nuckolls but has a daughter by another marriage .** He was to contact me after contacting his family back in Jan. The Nuckolls Family as told by Phyllis Nuckolls McMahan
Was an officer in World War I and living in San Antonio, Texas. For reaso ns unknown he did not contact his family in North Carolina. On one had hea rd from him in years. We first heard he had married a wealthy widow. Wh en Tony (my son) was six years of age, I was teaching him how to skip-tra ce a person. That is what I did in my collection work at Sears. Would y ou believe we located Roberts wife. He said, "Mama, she is on the phone ." Sure enough, her name was Edna and advised that Robert did not say mu ch about his family and only that he was from Winston-Salem. I learn ed he died with a heart attack and had no children. When dad and I was set ting up Sarah Jane's estate years prior to that, the attorney advis ed us we had to send a letter to Texas. Someone answered it and the attorn ey told dad we could have him come to North Carolina to claim the estat e. Edison said "If he is like that, I do not want to see him in North Caro lina, just send him a check."

Robert Lee had a following out with his mother and left home. I found lett ers and cards where he wrote home and to a lady friend who turned him do wn in marriage

The Nuckolls Family
as told by Phyllis Nuckolls McMahan
Edison and Maggie, Bland and Grey were riding in a pickup truck comi ng up Wilkes Mountain. We were driving very slowly and it was getting dar k. I held my head out of the window and said "Lord, I hear a woman screami ng and that big dog on the bank keeps following us." Mother said "Lord Go d, stop quick and get the boys in this cab." as they were riding in the ba ck, I learned later that night that a panther was following us.

Edison was the youngest of seven boys. His mother was so attached to hi m. He had to leave Colorado and move back to North Carolina, brothers incl uded. Robert, Dock, Gordie, Frank, Floyd and Roy.

Born March 11, 1895 and died Aug 22, 1975 with a heart attack. He marri ed Maggie Hill and they eloped by buggy and caught a train and went to Chi cago. Later took a job in Colordao working in the Gold Mines. He moved ba ck to North Carolina and had three children, Bland, Grey and Phyllis. Bla nd lived in Norfolk VA and died of a heart attack. He has a daughter th at lives in Dallas. Grey lives in Charleston, SC and has five childrenPhyl lis lives in Greensboro NC and has one son, Tony McMahan. After Maggie die d, Edison married Edna Cox of Virginia and had three daughters, Patrici a, Sandra and geraldine. Sandra married David Church of West Jefferson NC.

Events recalled by Phyllis Nuckolls McMahan regarding the events in the li fe of Edison Nuckolls
Edison Nuckolls and Everette Taylor were neighbors and grew up togeth er a kids. They went to college together at Boone and got their teaching c ertificates. (I have alantern the used while walking back from Boone whi ch is 40 miles). Uncle Everett met his wife, my mothers sister, Melissa Hi ll at da's house where she was staying when Bland was born. later Evere tt went to Criopple Creek Colorado to work in the Gold Mines and Dad join ed him later, after they graduated from college.

How Dad got to be a veternarian is because it was the type of work t he Dr Cicero Hill was engaged in. When dad bought his house, he also got t he equipment and doctor books. Dad, being very smart, studied the books a nd took the course by mail. He looked after a lot of the animals in the vi cinity. I can remember him filling horses teeeth. He did this up until a f ew years before he died.

Edison and Edna Cox were introduced by Charlie Cox at the Cox Store in Gol dhill Virginia. Both their nicknames were "Ed". Edison would drop by her f ather's store. Then one day they took the ice cream and went for a ri de on White Top Mountain in Virginia.

Edison Nuckolls A "Henpecked Husband"
Edison Nuckolls was the son of Willie and Sara Jane Shepherd Nuckolls, a g randson of James Wilburn Shepherd and a first cousin to brothers Grover a nd Harrison Shepherd.

The following is a collection of selected excerpts from a two-part story t itled Music From "The Lost Provinces by Marshall Wyatt. The story was publ ished in the Spring, 1996 and Summer, 1996 editions of
The Old-Time Herald, a magazine dedicated to old-time music.

Wilburn Edison Nuckolls

How Edison Nuckolls first learned music no one can remember, but lea rn it he did. "Oh, he just picked it up along the way." He could fiddle a nd he could ring a banjo and he could play most anything with strings. Edi son grew upo on the county line between Ashe and Alleghany in the communi ty of Furches, also known as Cranberry, in a time before radio existed a nd when phonographs were rare. He learned music from friends and relative s, and farmhands and traveling horse traders--anyone with a song to sing a nd a tune to play.

He and Maggie [Hill, Edison's first wife] had two boys, Bland and Grey, a nd a daughter, Phyliss, and they all played music. Maggie hammered a 5-str ing banjo, Phyllis played tenor banjo, Bland the mandolin, and Grey the gu itar. Edison Fiddled: "John Henry," "Old Hen Cackle," "Home Sweet Home." P hylis, the youngest child, remembers,

The whole family played music. We played one time for a contest at Nathan 's Creek School, and my brother Bland...was sitting on the edge of the sta ge with his mandolin and he just fell asleep and tumbled off. Bang! But t he rest of us kept on playing! The Children, we just chorded, you know, a nd Dad would give us signals when to change. He would take his foot and gi ve a little kick, so we always watched him. We were so tiny!

Nuckolls Family Band
Scottville, NC mid 1930's

Maggie (banjo), Phylis (tenor banjo), Edison (fiddle), Bland (mandolin), G rey (guitar).

Grey Nuckolls continues:

When I was a kid back there in the 1920s we used to have corn shuckings a nd molasses making, and at our home once a month they had candy making, a nd there'd be music playing and square dancing for family and good friend s. Sometimes Dad would take us around to fiddlers conventions. In Boone o ne time we took second prize, which was a sack of flour!
A corn shucking was a way to get your corn shucked for free. Sometimes you 'd find a row of red kernels in an ear of white cord--if you did that y ou could get your choice of any girl and kiss her! After the corn shuckin g, they'd clear out a room and have a big dance. People seemed to really e njoy life in those days, not so much stress like today. You might only ma ke a dollar a day, but you didn't have to worry about withholding tas, a nd nobody had any insurance either!

Corn shuckings and other communal activities had a long tradition in As he and Alleghany Counties where most citizens raised all of the food th at they put on their tables. Sugar was scarce and expensive, and often mol asses was the only sweet substance available. Molasses making was a lon g, slow task that required mashing sorghum cane in a horse-turned mill, fo llowed by a lengthy process of boiling and filtering. But hard work was te mpered by the opportunity to socialize and the promise of entertainment wh en the job was done. Friends would arrive to help at all stages of the pro cedure; music and dancing was sure to follow. Edison Nuckolls would oft en bring his family string band to such gatherings, knowing that he in tu rn could rely on his neighbors to assist him when the need arose.

THE FATAL COURTSHIP
by Ephram Woodie &
the Henpecked Husbands

...by the time Clay Reed joined Ephraim Woodie's band in 1927 he was we ll respected as a fiddler. Ephraim was then still a bachelor but Clay h ad married Bertha Church three years prior, and Edison Nuckolls had tied t he know back in 1917. In jest, Ephraim began calling his two partners "T he Henpecked Husbands." The name stuck and soon the threesome bagan playi ng at local dances and social events with handbills announcing: "We Play B anjo, Violin, Guitar. Singers of old time songs, as 'Cluck Old Hen' as we ll as love songs. It takes 4 to 6 hours to play all we know. Come Bring A ll Your Friends And Sweethearts."

In the fall of 1929 Ephraim Woodie and the Henpecked Husbands got a chan ce to make recordings for the Columbia Phonography Company. They first rec orded "Last God Dollar," with Clay Reed fiddling and Edison Nuckolls on ba njo. Ephraim Woodie sang in his nasal mountain accent.

Modest Sales can be attributed in large part to poor timing. Colubia 15564 -D by Ephraim Woodie & The Henpecked Husbands was released in 1930, a ti me when nationwide record sales began a drastic decline in response to t he collapsing American economy. A recording career was clearly not a pract ical pursuit. Edison and Clay had families to feed and fields to plow, a nd Ephraim had yet to finish high school. But the band continued to do wh at it did best--performed around home, at box suppers, square dances, scho ols, picnics, and parties.

Handkerchief Dolls (photo)

When friends and neighbors gathered at the Nuckolls' house to hear musi c, most of them would bring the children along. Edison had a pair of dol ls that he'd made from two handkerchiefs, and he used them to entertain t he kids, as described by his daughter Sandra: "He would tie one of those d olls to his strumming hand with little pieces of black thread and it wou ld hang down almost to the floor. Then he'd make it dance. When he play ed the banjo that doll would dance exactly to the beat! One handkerchief w as black and one was white, they were supposed to be a black man and a whi te man, I think that's what the impression was."

Bill Williams (fiddle), Charlie Cox (guitar), and Edison Nuckolls (banj o) played music together for more than three decades. (Photo)

The music of the Lost Provinces is pure old-time music, music from the hea rd and soul, not motivated by publicity potential or profit margin. Mus ic for the home and the schol and the backyard adn the front porch. "Kitch en music." Music at the country store on Saturday night and music at chur ch on Sunday morning. Live music. This is the music of the Woodie Brothe rs and the "Henpecked Husbands," of Clay Reed and Donald Thompson, of Bi ll Williams, Charlie Cox and Edison Nuckolls. None of these names are famo us, nor are they likely to be. These men never made a hit records or play ed in concert halls. In fact, none of them were music professionals at al l, their recorded legacy just a handful of scratchy old records and a f ew reels of tape. but their importance cannot be overstated; these musicia ns were bearers of a vital cultural tradition, their motives were on es of creative expression and social interaction. And the tradition liv es on through all the children and grandchildren who continue to sing a nd play music.

Wilburn Edison Nuckolls, born Mar. 11, 1895; died Aug. 22, 1975; buri ed at Cranberry Community Cemetery; married 1st Margaret (Maggie) Nevada H ill, Sept. 18, 1917; married 2nd Edna Alice Cox, Mar. 18, 1927. Edison rec eived his education at Furches, NC and Applachian College in Boone, NC wi th a degree in teaching. He and Maggie Hill eloped by buggy tot he dep ot in West Jefferson, NC, and boarded a train to Chicago to join his broth er. Later they left Chicago and went to Colorado Springs, CO, where Edison was employed with the gold mines.
After a few years, they returned to Furches and lived on a farm his moth er had purchased for them, January 2, 1931. Edison became engaged in farmi ng, cattle raising, lumber, and owned his own sawmill for over 20 years. E dison was a great musician and played all instruments. He played five-stri ng banjo in a band, having recorded and broadcast on a radio station in No rth Wilkes boro, NC. He aslo had a private band at home in which every mem ber of his family took part in playing. Edison was a very hard worker a nd was one of the last farmers in the county to work the land without t he aid of a tractor, but instead used horse-drawn machinery. His machin es can now be seen at Shatley Springs Inn along with other antique machine ry.

Maggies father was Dr Cirero Hill. When he died , mother's brother want ed to keep the house in the family. Dad was the only one in the family th at could afford the house. I understand Dr Burgess Cox Waddell had the ho use built by Perry Waddell, Jones brother. Jones mother was Ida and is rel ated to Edna Cox.
