Research Notes for James Harvey Nuckols:

Daughter death cert Eliza Nuckols Lowman names William Harvey Nuckols

Parentage not proven-either of 2  parents, suggesting Andrew, as descendants settled in Oxford Co, KS. Andrews brothers children also settled in same area of Kansas suggesting strong connection.

1. location of John Wesley Nuckols in Rock Island Co, IL in 1860 suggests a connection

2. Was previously married in 1823, could have had son 1824

3. Also fits age bracket to be son of Andrew, John W brother

4, was in 1865 Rock Island Co, State Census

5. Does not fit age bracket in 1865 census

6. Descendants of both settled in Johnson Co, Oxford, KS

Extensive search for William or Harvey in 1850, 1860 and not found.

He probably died before the 1880 census because his children were living in other homes.

James married Mary Jane Kennedy. Mary was born in Jan 1842 in IN and died in 1919 in Johnson Co, KS at age 77.

Research Notes for Mary Jane Kennedy:

Research on Mary Jane from Sandi Koscak NWK-

At first my thoughts on Mary were that she was the daughter of Obert Kennedy and Nancy Warren. But after tracking them through the census records, I determined she was not their daughter. Robert and Nancy DID name a daughter Mary jane, but she appears in the census with her parents through 1880. However, we should at least be able to confirm that she WAS some sort of relative, possible a niece to a deceased brother... There were be no other reason for her child Charles Nuckles to be left with Robert and Nancy Kennedy after the death of husband james Nuckols.

Another strong indicator is that her daughter Emma was left with a family and in the household was another Kennedy, B Young Kennedy. This led me to another search to find the daughter of Robert and Nancy Kennedy,  Hannah married Alvauza Patton 12/10/1874 in Tippicanoe Co, IN and removed back to Montgomery Co, IN. B Young Kennedy is named as a brother in law, and Emma Nuckles as a servant.  Although we can show Hannah as the daughter of Robert Kennedy, I am not able to show B Young Kennedy as a son. They seemed to have all female children in all census records. B Young Kennedy was age 24 in 1880 placing his DOB @1855 and he does not appear in either 1860 or 1870 census with the family.  But still points to the Kennedy connection for Mary Jane to have placed her child with a family member. I hold to a deceased uncle (brother to Robert Kennedy) theory.

The following is the Kennedy research I have done in order to determine family connections.

Burial Notes for Ida I Nuckols:

Also, on the Tomahawk Cemetery List is a child named Ida I. Nuckols, daughter of J. M. & M. Nuckols. She was living in the time that our James Nuckols family had children, and she died in 17 Feb 1877 aged 4 years 7 mos 11 days (b. 6 Jul 1872). She should have been listed in the 1875 Kansas Census with her mother. The youngest child is listed there as P.L. Nuckles. Note: I am looking at this census again and thinking that this child's initials were transcribed incorrently in Ancestry.com. Her name could be translated as "I. L. Nuckels". Daughter of J.H. and M. Nuckols.

4 years, 7 months, 11 days. No stone. Information obtained from the transcription by Connie Foster, Kansas Historical Society, and/or from the City's list of graves to be moved.

Gladys Gertrude Livingston - Cause of Death

The following is in response to my question about the cause of death for Gladys Gertrude (Livingston) Justice.  What is the source for her cause of death to be recorded as Spanish Influenza?

My deceased Grandmother Thelma Emma Klett Armstrong, Maude Livingston Klett's oldest daughter told me about her mother's death from the Spanish Influenza while living at Maude's mother's house in Kansas.  My grandmother Thelma was failing in health, and soon died, when I questioned her about our family history, but she was very sound in mind.  She told me that they had a black wreath on the door to indicate death from flu.   That the man came to the house and processed her mothers body in the kitchen, on the table.  She was about 7 years old and was sitting on the back steps with her baby sister, Beulah May when he carried out the buckets of blood and whatever and buried them in the backyard.  She said she was devastated and didn't know what to do.  She said that her father was away at work and the Grandmother didn't know what she was going to do with four motherless children.  So she began to implore of her relatives for ones who would take children to raise.  My great grandfather Roy Klett heard about what she intended to do and came home and gathered up his kids and went to live with his mother Elizabeth Klett Hines Judge.  He farmed land in Kansas with Elizabeth Judge and her husband, his two sisters, and his four children.  Unfortunately, Paul Judge must have been the one to greet the census taker and reported the household as all being Judge's and himself as the head of the household.  If left to future generations my family heritage would have been lost in history under the name of Judge instead of Klett.  My Grandma also told me that her Grandmother couldn't take care of them all because she had had another daughter die and leave four children motherless.  My Aunt Virginia, grandmother's daughter, said that she thought that they must have both died of the influenza since so many were being taken with it at that time.  If you know of another story that is more accurate I would love to be informed.

I believe the story her grandmother told her.  For a child of 7 to experience such a dramatic death experience, I'm sure that would be carved into her memory.  But, I don't know for sure the date of Maude's death.  And if, 1918 is correct then she and her sister Gertrude died almost a year or more apart.  I guess it is possible that they both died of the flu, but I suspect that an assumption was made about Gertrude's death.  So I would like more concrete evidence

General Notes and Information for Alberta L Livingston:

From Claudette 3/2010

She worked as a stenographer for the police dept. and enjoyed writing.  There were a few curious police cases that she wrote about and they were published in "True Detective Mysteries"  My cousin Mike Justice sent me a copy of one article titled, The Red Riddle of St. Andrew's Place.  It was a strange but true story of a young man who lived in the attic of a couple, with the wifes permission.  The husband was not aware of his presence.  After living there for a long time he eventually murdered her husband.
