Probably from Tazewell Co, VA. EDY NUCKOLS was the first wife of Harden P NUCKLES. He was born 8/6/1809 in Tazewell Co, VA and died 9/1/1881 Bates Co, Maysburg, MO. After Edy died he married Elizabeth Kindred Runyan. For Edy to marry in 1831, it would place her birth prior to 1815. No NUCKOLS families found this early in TN. The earliest was in Robertson Co, TN in 1820. This county in within one county in distance where Richard Nuckols and Temperance Walton settled. None in Rutherford Co, TN.
1880 Census Sullivan Co, TN is a Jesse Baker age 23, wife mary 27 and dau Laura 8m. If this is the same Jesse Baker, then his wife died and he poss remarried in 1883 to Elizabeth. Jesse is found again in the 1900 Census Sullivan Co, Dist 3 TN pg17 born 5/1856. However he is married to a lady named Margaret. Coincidentally they are married 17 years mathcing this marriage date in 1883. They have dau Sarah born 10/1881, son Robert born 11/1883 and a son Elbert born3/1885. The next door neighbor is Elbert NICKLES who is suspect is the father of Margaret. What it means is that Elizabeth probably was Margaret Elizabeth NICKLES. So this probably is a spelling error on the marriage transcription.
PLEASANT WILSON
is found in the 1850 Census of
Orange Co, Dist 1, NC pg 186 age 36 born in
Orange Co, NC, but wife is named Unice age 25,
also born Orange Co, NC. A son William age 5 and
son Edward J age 1 probably children of Unice.
No older children to indicate he was married
before, but his age indicates he could very well
have married the first time in 1831, but very
young at age 17. There were no NUCKLES families
in Orange Co NC. The Pleasant Wilson who married
Elizabeth Nuckles was born 1775 in Granville NC
the son of Henry Wilson and Rachel Paschall.
Pleasant's first wife was Mary Howelson whom he
married 3/21/1798 in Warren Co, NC. this
Pleasant was probably his son since the 1840

likely candidate is the one living with William

Thomas DAVIDSON was searched in the 1850 Census of Kentucky. None were found in Woodford County. There were 8 found, but none had a wife named Elizabeth. If married in 1835, it places her date of birth prior to 1817. The Woodford County KY Nuckols familes are all documented with no children named Elizabeth not accounted for. However, there are gaps in the dates for the births of the children of Samuel and Mary Crockett Carlisle NUCKOLS which leaves room for another daughter of this age range. The problem is that in 1820 there are no female children in the household.
George MARTIN
is found in the 1850 Census of Jefferson Co KY on page 223. George Martin 41 Elizabeth 35 Mary J 11 Eliza R 9 Elizabeth 6 John 3 Sarah 68. Also in household were William , Esther and Wm Posttittawaite age 74,67,28. What makes this interesting is the second household away is the family of William Andrew NUCKOLS and Pamelia WHITLOE. IF this a sister born c 1834-35 to Andrew it eliminates the possibility that the Elizabeth NUCKOLS who married Taliferro SKINNER is the daughter of Edward T NUCKOLS. We know he would not name two daughters Elizabeth. Even more interesting is the family between these two is Robert and Catherine SKINNER, relationship not known. |

Email dated 4/10/2004 from jrbristow@worldnet.att.net My ancestral grandparents were from Putnam Co IN. They pronounce their name "Nichols" but its spelled (current day) "Nicholas". There is also a possibility of a connection to a Jeremiah Nichols (1830 & 1840 Census) but so far I've not been able to prove anything. From "The Bibb Family in America 1640-1940" by Charles William Bibb, Baltimore Md, 1941 pg 106 Jesse BIBB born 1774 was the son of William Bibb. Born in Amherst Co, VA he married Polly NUCKLES on Nov 30th 1796. It is evident Jesse did not remain in Amherst County, as we hear no more of him in that county after the register of the marriage. By referring back to William BIBB, brother of Jesse, we find him in South Carolina at the head of a gropu of the Bibb family. There is some rather clear evidence that Jesse BIBB went with his brother William to South Carolina and from there into Mississippi where he settled near Natchez. IN 1807 William Harper died leaving an estate in which Jesse Bibb shared. In 1808 we find Jesse Bibb giving power of attorney to Thomas Bibb then living in South Carolina, said document empowering Thomas Bibb to look after his interest in the estate of William Harper. This Thomas Bibb was also a son of William Bibb who came from Amherst County, VA, and in some way this Jesse Bibb was willed a part in the estate of William Harper. Thomas Bibb married perhaprs Miss harper, daughter of William Harper. Their son Henry Harper became judge in Arkansas later on. There is no record of any children for Jesse and Polly Bibb, though there most liekly were sons and daughters of this couple. Jesse was not found in any census records.
Polly NICKLES or NUCKLES was possibly the thrid missing daughter of Obediah Overton. She married John Thomasson in Granger COunty TN where Obediah and his family settled. Anderson Underwood is found in the 1850 Maury Co, 24th Dist, TN pg 288. He is age 30 but married to a Nancy age 23 born in NC. No children, but Underwoold looks as if he lives next to his father, David age 71 If Underwood was married to Sarah Knuckles, she must have died prior to 1850.

Thomas NUCKOLS, m Rusha DAFFERN 13 Oct 1837 written on the back of the bond "I did unite in matrimony the within named persons" signed by Andrew NUCKOLS on the above written date. Thomas McCombs signed as a witness on the bond.Thomas NICHOLS were found in the 1850 Census of Barren Co, KY pg 413. It is hard to tell on the actual census page if Nichols or Nuckols. There does not seem to be a dotted "i". Thomas was age 43 b KY, his wife was named Lucy age 41 b VA, dau America J age 20, dau Missouri A age 18, Alabama E age 17, Mary V 13 ,Leroy age 11, Bird W, 8,Thomas M 7, Lucy M 5, Willis A 8 months. This is obviously not the marriage of Thomas an Rusha as ages of the children do not agree with the marriage date, nor name of the spouse. So no further info on this Thomas who married Rusha is available.

1900 Bell Co, Pineville KY is Isaac A Stewart born 1/1855 in England. Wife name is Elizabeth and not Anna, although there is a middle initial that I cannot determine. They say they have been married 9 years, placing marriage date closer to 1890. A son in the household born 3/1893 says a marriage of 12/20/1892 not likely, however there is no other Isaac Stewart in the vicinity, and no Annie Knuckles. (Marriage bond says both of lawfull age)
There was
no John BUNCH in
the 1900 Census with a wife Elizabeth married
for 14 years. Marriage witnessed by P
Knuckles, which could be Peter Knuckles, Peter
married 1881 and witnessed his brother on same
day. Possible one of the twin sisters Louisa md
Wren, and Louizy, might be one who married
Bunch. Both were of lawfull age, which his
sisters were. On the same day her prob sister, Mariah was married, John Bunch and John Knuckles witnessed marriage of Mollie Scarbrough and Andrew Bird |

Henry E
Northern is found in the 1900 census Rockcastle Co, Scaffold Cane, KY ED66 Henry E Northern, 67, 5/1833 but wife is Mary born 1852 and does not say how long they have been married. Only child is Ben born 1872 too early to be child of Sarah Knuckles. I assume Sarah to have died in childbirth prior to 1900. There were 2 Knuckles men as witnesses to this marriage, but the printing on the page is too light to read. One is H--se Knuckles which could be Hence Knuckles and the other is not readable, may be D first letter. |

Rockcastle Co is where the children of John Nuckles and Jane Bray (son of Obediah) settled. Their daughter Mary married David Scarborough and they had many children. From Fredwyn 2/2011-book 14, p. 54 Rockcastle County. Franklin Young m. Mary J. Nuckles on Oct 21 1875 at home of Jennie Nuckles. Witnesses were John Wren and Henry Loman. As you know Jennie Nuckles was Jane Bray Knuckles, probably a gr.mother of witness John Wren. Franklin Young, gr.son of Obediah Nuckles, was John's cousin. But who is Mary J. Knuckles? The 1880 census does not show this family. |
Marshall has been temporarily connected to George Matt Knuckles and an
unknown first wife named Sarah. I need further confirmation. This is evidence I
have:
1. George Matt moved to Hamilton Co, Cincinatti
where he died, as did Marshall and all of his children.
2. George Matt was old enough to have a child Marshall in 1904. (IF DOB 1904)
3. George Matt did not marry Bertha Showers until about 1909.
4. Marriage certificate of Marshall names parents George and Sarah Knuckles,
both born KY
Claims age 21 on 1920 marriage document
Death cert DOB 4/28/1900 matches age in 1920 to Fannie Simpson
BUT George Matt too young to have a son at age 13
